Ensuring you have the right equipment, dress and tackle is part of what makes your experience just right at Mecatina. Try not to over dress or over tackle. After many years of experience, here’s what we recommend:
A 9 foot fly rod rated for an 8 or 9 weight forward line is quite suitable for the Mecatina. Lighter fly rods can be used at the discretion of the angler. While fishing, the best way to ensure you keep your powerful salmon is a solid reel with 100 m backing.
The type of Flies best suited for the Mecatina are sizes 6 and 8 for standard wet and dry flies.
Good producing patterns include Silver Rat, Rusty Rat, Blue Charm, and Bombers. The most effective fly that we have developed is the "Eldon Special" developed by Camp Manager, Eldon Bobbitt himself. These flies are available at Mecatina. We are sure that if you smile a lot and be nice to him, he will give you a few.
Fishing requires a certain amount of variety to go with the weather. So your clothing choices can be similar to that of your fishing excursions at home. Bring along clothing for ranges of weather including rain gear, warm underwear, and fishing waders.
From Our Guests:
Keith and Russell were fantastic guides. I was really pleased as this trip was a gift for my father’s retirement next year and he had a great time. I am sure that you heard that we caught a lot of salmon (66 salmon hooked by the two of us) along with a lot of big sea trout and did not have to fish too hard. – Michael Livingstone, Manager – Exploration East Coast Mecatina guest in 2015
